While hydropower comprises the majority of power development in Laos PDR, climate change poses a significant challenge to planners aiming to increase the growing population’s access to reliable energy. Abt leads the integration of resource and resilience planning into the nation’s power sector to reduce the country’s vulnerability to climate change and to build the government’s capacity to improve power sector planning, including accounting for climate vulnerability. Abt also collaborates with USAID and other donor agencies to facilitate cross-border power trade and improve regional power planning.
To diversify the energy mix, significant efforts are needed to introduce alternative generation technologies. Abt is working with the government of Laos to pilot new, innovative models for procuring renewable energy, including solar photovoltaics.
