Abt, EPA Help Launch Environmental Organization to Improve Waste Management in Southeast Europe, Middle East and Central Asia

Rockville, Md.  –  Abt Global is helping improve waste management and mitigate climate change in cities throughout Southeast Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. Working on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Global Methane Initiative, Abt is joining the effort to create a Center of Excellence for Circular Economy and Climate Change (CECC) based in Serbia.

The CECC will help build capacity and facilitate the exchange of solid waste management knowledge between local and national governments in the three regions. The ultimate goal is to help these governments develop circular economies that maximize the value they derive from finite resources while reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) from the waste sector, such as methane and black carbon.

Abt worked with the EPA, the Serbian Solid Waste Association, GIZ, THINKCities and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to develop the initial concept for the CECC in 2018. The organization was launched in spring 2019. Abt continues to work with the center’s leadership to develop its strategic plan and execute projects.

“Reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants from the waste sector can generate significant near-term health, environmental and economic benefits at the global and local levels,” said Project Director Joe Donahue.  “We are pleased to help stand up this Center of Excellence to coordinate capacity-building activities and information exchange across regions.”
